Course overview

This 16 hour hands-on course is designed to familiarize crime scene investigators, death investigators and detectives with the skills needed to identify and collect insects and insect related evidence during death investigations. Students will work through numerous practical exercises involving everything from identifying insects to collection and submission for entomological exam. Forza Forensics is committed to working with your organization's personnel to make them better equipped to handle any investigative situation.

THIS COURSE INCLUDES A PRE-MADE ENTOMOLOGICAL EVIDENCE COLLECTION KIT FOR THE STUDENT TO KEEP.

Day One.

Students can expect to spend the first day learning proper terminology and biology of insects, which leads into topics on the documentation, collection and preservation of entomology evidence.

  • Succession & decomposition

  • Insects as evidence

  • Entomological collection kits

Day Two.

On day two, students learn from previous cases involving insects and the value of forensic entomology exams. Students then put their skills to the test with lab and field practicals.

  • Analysis of entomological evidence

  • Time of colonization determination

  • Case review

  • Student laboratory practical

  • Student field practical

Course requirements.

Students will need to bring any camera equipment normally carried while on duty.

(Camera kit rental is available. Select option during registration)

Student are also encouraged to train with their own crime scene equipment since that is what they will use on a day to day basis. However, all forensic supplies needed to complete the practical exercises will be available (excludes camera kit).
